Defining the ‘Super’ – What Is and What Isn’t Good for Us

Superbugs, superhero bacteria, super food or superheroes saving lives – in the era of superlatives it’s hard to navigate and know which one of the ‘super’ things works in our favour and which one doesn’t. Comic book characters have entered the life of the everyday consumer and expanded their perspective once limited to the fantasy world. Now every area of our lives carries that vocabulary of super characters, not just the entertainment industry. From our food to our body and our health – we have them within and around us.

Superbugs are not Superheroes

Superbugs are antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are quickly becoming one of the biggest health challenges of our time. The overuse of antibiotics over the years led to the point where the bacteria that are meant to be killed by the antibiotics have essentially grown used to them. Now researchers need to discover new ways to prevent and treat drug-resistant infections and we need to learn about the causes, consequences, and possible solutions for the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)[1], which is the ability of certain microorganisms to survive the attacks of the drugs we use to eliminate them.

Despite their microscopic size, the so-called superbugs are a grave threat to humanity. A report from the World Health Organisation puts it like this, “Without urgent and coordinated action by many stakeholders, the world is headed for a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor injuries which have been treatable for decades can once again kill”. The figures are certainly alarming; it is estimated that every year drug resistance is responsible for over 38,000 deaths in Thailand, 25,000 in the European Union, and 23,000 in the United States.[2]

“The best way to protect yourself is to reduce your own exposure to antibiotics. If you can afford it, buy antibiotic-free meat. If you are sick, don’t ask your doctor to prescribe antibiotics unless it is clear that you have a bacterial infection. The more antibiotics you take, the greater your risk.”[3]

Superhero Bacteria – An Alternative to Antibiotics

Unlike ordinary drugs, which kill the bacteria themselves, the superhero bacteria rescue the body from the effects of bacterial infection — specifically, the deadly loss of muscle wasting associated with serious disease.[4]

“Focusing on disease tolerance — preventing harm done by the disease — instead of microbial eradication is a new paradigm of therapy for infectious diseases,” co-first author Alexandria Palaferri Schiebe said in a news release.

Salk scientists discovered these superheroes in the naturally occurring communities of bacteria living in the digestive system of mice resistant to superbug infection. They isolated a strain of E. coli that appeared to travel from the gut into fat and muscle tissue when the mouse was under bacterial attack. In case equivalent superheroes live inside us, we can have an alternative to antibiotic therapy.

Probiotics – Another Kind of Superheroes

Minimizing the duration of illness or even staying healthy during the year – these are definitely among our health goals. But because of our everyday life, diet, work, stress or medications, our immune system could get out of balance and we can end up fighting illnesses.

“Our immune system recognizes certain chemicals and will instigate a response to fight off infections,” says Jason Tetro, a microbiologist, and self-titled probiotic know-it-all. “It’s not about boosting our immune system. That’s just a buzzword. What we are really doing with probiotics is stabilizing our immune system, which allows us to recover quicker from illness.”

“There are a number of conditions for which probiotics are suggested to be of benefit, including eczema, food allergies, lactose intolerance, treatment of recurrent bacterial infection called C. difficile, inflammatory bowel disease, and generally an improved resistance to common infections,” says Bryce Wylde, one of Canada’s leading alternative health experts.[5] So if you want to stabilize your immune system, with the help of probiotics you can.

Doctor’s Choice Superheroes

Superheroes have the power to impact the real world. Their power lies in the adventurous, ambitious hearts and minds of children, who have the capacity to grow up to be the heroes they idolize the most. They would help protect our world—not from otherworldly aliens or mutants, but to foster global health and battle public health disasters. Their tools are not mythical artifacts or make-believe gadgets, but natural based vaccines or other public health items.[6]

It’s also true for glandular therapy that works to increase the tone, function, and/or activity of the corresponding gland, which in turn benefits the entire human system. When supplementing with a healthy animal gland, your body’s corresponding gland receives energy boosting since it resonates the ingested gland materials for its own benefit. Doctor’s Choice did exactly that; formulated: Adrenal Gland, Thymus Gland and Thyrodine Thyroid Gland that will fight for you and your health.

Which superhero will you call next time?
